Bio
GM Exterior Design Manager Rich Scheer has a passion for teamwork and winning – on and off the field.
The veteran GM Exterior Design Manager and avid recreational sportsman found his formula for successful design begins with a clear understanding of the customer’s needs and desires and the assembly of
talented individuals that share a common vision and enthusiasm for their work.
Scheer, age 40, is currently working in the Crossover Studio in Michigan, a position he has held since May, 2010. In April of 2010 Rich returned to North America Design completing a three year assignment at the GM Design studios in Korea.
Rich joined GM upon graduation from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1994 where he received a Bachelor
of Fine Arts in Industrial Design. His early career spanned a variety of production and concept vehicle
projects, including the Buick Rendezvous, Cadillac Escalade, Oldsmobile Profile show car, Corvette
C5 ZO6 and fourth generation Camaro SS.
In 2001 Rich spent six months working at GM’s then partner, Suzuki, in Hamamatsu, Japan as a Lead Exterior Designer for the first generation Chevrolet Equinox.
Upon his return to North America, Rich was named a Design Manager for GM’s mid-size sedans, including
the Saturn Aura and Aura Show Car and the Chevrolet Malibu. He followed that up with an assignment
supporting the Production and Advanced Cadillac Exterior Design team.
Prior to his current assignment in the Crossover Studio, Scheer was named Director of Exterior Design for GM Korea in 2007 with leadership responsibilities for the production versions of the Chevrolet’s Spark,
Cruze Sport, and Orlando.
Scheer also enjoys the coaching role, serving not only as an instructor of automotive design at his alma mater and the College for Creative Studies from 1994 to 2001, but also a leadership role in several summer
intern programs at GM Design. The latter was featured on Discovery Channel’s “Future Car” program.
A native of Kenilworth, New Jersey, Scheer enjoys his family time with his wife and two young daughters. His hobbies include working on and driving his classic 1971 Camaro RS and several recreational sports, including softball, football and golf.
Ever the competitor, who knows success takes passion, talent, time, and teamwork, Scheer continues to inspire himself and others by leading teams through the development of exciting products for General Motors.
