Timeline for competition

This first stage of the Car Design News and GM interactive design competition has now officially finished. Over 200 design students registered to take part, with more than 130 submitting a proposal in response to one of the four challenging briefs set by GM’s design teams.

The next stage of the competition will involve the selection of a shortlist of the best students who will work much more closely with GM's team of mentors to hone their designs.

Each mentor is specifically assigned depending on whether the student selected the Cadillac interior, Cadillac exterior, product design or sculpting brief, and will advise each student accordingly, ahead of the submission of finished designs towards the end of November.

As a new sting in the tail, the very best entrants will also undertake a face-to-face interview with top GM designers in December, where they will be asked to explain the rationale behind their work. After this, the eight winners will be selected, and we'll announce them at the NAIAS.

The prize that each designer is in the running for is one of eight three-month paid internships at GM's Tech Center in Warren, MI, where they will work alongside the design teams from Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC.
